About Larimar

Larimar is found in exactly one place on earth.

A single mountainside in the Dominican Republic, in the province of Barahona, where a volcanic deposit of blue pectolite, a mineral found in many places but in this particular blue color nowhere else in the world, was discovered in 1974 by a Dominican man named Miguel Mendez, who named the stone after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for sea, mar.

The indigenous Taino people of the Dominican Republic had known about this stone long before its modern discovery. They called it the Stone of Atlantis, believing it had fallen from the sky into the sea and washed ashore as a gift from the divine feminine.

Its color, that extraordinary blue that ranges from pale sky to deep Caribbean, comes from the presence of copper in the pectolite crystal structure. The more copper, the deeper and more vivid the blue.
