🐚 About Orthoceras

The long, cone-shaped fossil seen in this display is Orthoceras, an extinct marine animal that lived 200–400 million years ago. Considered an ancient ancestor of today’s squid, Orthoceras swam and crawled along the ocean floor. Upon death, their shells settled on the seabed, later fossilizing through millions of years of mineralization.

Orthoceras propelled itself through the water by filling chambers in its shell (called septa) with air, then expelling it to move forward like a natural jet.

The spiral, Nautilus-shaped fossil in this display is an Ammonite, another extinct marine creature related to squids, octopuses, and modern nautiluses.
