About Orthoceras
The long cone-shaped one in the Orthoceras and ammonite fossil Stand is an Orthoceras. Orthoceras were marine animals that lived between 200 and 400 million years ago.
Orthoceras are the ancestors of the squid. At some point, a mass extinction occurred; many died in the shallow water area that is now Morocco. Orthoceras not only swam but also crawled along the ocean floor. When they died, their shells fell to the floor. Years of sediment covered them, and they fossilized into stone.
Orthoceras filled their chambers (septa)with air to swim, then squirted it out to propel themselves through the water like jets!
About Ammonites
The Nautilus-shaped fossil in the Orthoceras and Ammonite Fossil Stand is an ammonite. Ammonites closely resemble modern squids, octopuses, and chambered nautiluses. Ammonites were carnivores. They lived around the same time as Orthoceras; some are even older than dinosaurs! They were predators in the oceans.
